FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
? – What does ULTRA Compressed mean?
A - Most other bedding for horses and animals is packaged on balers that compress roughly 2-to-1, or simply bagged with no compression. SUNCOAST’s baling system compresses shavings in excess of 4-to-1. What that means is you get MORE bedding in a smaller package, thus the term “Ultra Compressed”.
? – Why are some other brand’s bales very heavy and SUNCOAST is very light?
A - Generally, other baled products can be heavier because of the large amount of sawdust, fines and/or moisture in the product. A premium bedding may have a small amount of fines but consist mainly of thin shavings to maximize absorption and cushioning capabilities. SUNCOAST Pine Shavings are consistent . . . bale after bale, low dust, and  lighter in weight because of the very dry nature of the product and the minimum amount of fines.
? – What is the best way to expand SUNCOAST’s very compressed bales.
A - We’ve found that cutting open and removing the package around the bale and then kicking it and using a fork or shovel helps to quickly loosen up and expand the shavings to spread them out for a fluffy bed. You would need to spend a similar amount of  time hauling and opening the additional bales needed of other products to achieve the same volume that is provided by ONE bale of our shavings.
? – How can I make an informed purchase decision when some bales don’t tell me the quantity of shavings expanded?
A - Suncoast agrees – you can’t! Federal labeling laws require animal bedding to be sold by volume (cubic feet). The law also requires the quantity declaration must include both the quantity in the compressed state and the usable quantity expanded.
? - Our facility is an Equine Hospital. Is your product clean enough for a hospital environment?
A - Yes, based on an independent lab, Suncoast is sterilized via our rotary drying process of 800 to 900 degrees. The lab described it this way: Your hand is 200 times more infected with E.coli, molds, yeasts, salmonella etc., than a Suncoast Flake. (Lab results available upon request)
? Are SUNCOAST Pine Shavings safe to use for chickens?
A -Â Yes, SUNCOAST Shavings are frequently used by poultry houses and game bird breeders.
